Meet Valentin! A French researcher fascinated by exploring our planet through the eyes of satellites. His driving question: How can satellite data help us understand the ocean surface motions — and how can this knowledge guide us in protecting it?

Currently pursuing his PhD at the Institut des Géosciences de l’Environnement (Université Grenoble-Alpes) within the Ocean Modelling group, Valentin works on reconstructing ocean surface currents from satellite altimetry data. By using advanced numerical methods, he provides images of the very complex motions at the surface of the ocean, that play an essential role in the earth’s climate.
Since an early age, Valentin has been intrigued by the idea of studying Earth from space. Today, his research brings us closer to understanding the role of oceans in the earth system — a crucial step toward understanding how they are impacted by global warming and how to preserve them for generations to come.
