ECS involvement in IAPSO

Since 2018, the International Association of the Physical Sciences of the Oceans (IAPSO) has a branch specifically for early career members of our scientific community, the IAPSO ECS (https://www.iapsoecs.org). With an early career participation as high as 80% in recent IAPSO assemblies, there is no doubt that early career members constitute a crucial part of IAPSO’s activities.

The IAPSO ECS exists as a resource and a platform to provide opportunities for networking and conference activities, and easy access to information about jobs, field work opportunities, workshops and more. We develop and promote initiatives that increase diversity and inclusivity within the ocean sciences, and aim to create awareness of the associated gaps/challenges and discrimination that currently exist within the scientific community. In our newsletter, we advertise a wide range of ocean science activities and publish interviews with early career researchers in our field, to highlight the diversity among us in terms of research topics, backgrounds and scientific journeys.

By liaising with other national and international networks for early career researchers, like those under the IUGG umbrella and beyond, we increase the impact and connectivity of the IAPSO Early Career Network.

Importantly, the IAPSO ECS is represented on the IAPSO Executive Committee to make sure that early career voices are heard in the wider organisation.
