ECS VIDEO SERIES: ERIK LOEBEL (IACS)

Meet Erik! A German scientist dedicated to understanding our planet’s changing climate through satellite eyes. He specializes in monitoring the cryosphere using satellite observations, focusing particularly on the ice sheet changes in Greenland and Antarctica.

Want to know more about Erik’s career? Watch the video below:

Erik’s work bridges data and discovery — he develops satellite monitoring systems that track how Earth’s most remote frozen regions are evolving.

Fascinated about satellite technology and intelligent data processing, Erik combines remote sensing, machine learning, and glaciology to resolve patterns in ice sheet behavior and unravel the processes driving these changes. By quantifying and understanding these ongoing transformations, his research contributes to improving simulations of future ice sheet changes, including mass loss and sea level contribution. Recognized for his excellence, Erik received the Graham Cogley Award (IACS, 2023) and the EGU Outstanding Student and PhD Candidate Presentation Award (2021). He also serves on the German National Committee of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), where he was Co-Chair from 2021 to 2024.
