Meet Veronica Tollenaar – IACS ECS Spotlight
Veronica Tollenaar is a postdoctoral researcher from the Netherlands, currently working at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium. Her postdoc project focuses on finding the oldest ice in Antarctica, with a particular focus on blue ice areas. In addition, Veronica serves as the ECS representative for the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS).

Veronica’s research is crucial for understanding Earth’s past climate. Blue ice areas are especially valuable because they can expose very old ice at or near the surface, making it possible to collect samples that are normally buried deep in the ice sheet. In the field, Veronica searches for these precious ice samples, and sometimes even meteorites, exploring how they relate to the surrounding ice and climate history.

In January 2025, Veronica spent nearly two months in Antarctica conducting fieldwork, investigating specific blue ice areas.
