ECS involvement in IAG

Actively promoting the involvement of ECS in IAG started in 2023 with the establishment of the IAG ECS Representative Group. Each Commission (Commission 1: Reference Frames, Commission 2: Gravity Field, Commission 3: Earth Rotation and Geodynamics, Commission 4: Positioning and Applications), each Inter-Commission Committee (ICC on Theory, ICC on Marine Geodesy, ICC on Geodesy for Climate Research), the project “Novel Sensors and Quantum Technology for Geodesy” (QuGe), as well as GGOS, has assigned a dedicated ECS representative. These representatives form the IAG ECS representative group.

In addition, Rebekka Steffen represented the IAG ECS representative group in the IAG Executive Committee until March 2026, and Michela Ravanelli is now officially representing the IAG ECS group until a formal ECS/EDI representative position is created for the next term. In total, the IAG ECS representative group currently consists of 10 members. However, also outside of this group ECS are and can be involved in the parts of IAG.

Within each structural part of IAG, there are also Working Groups (WG) and Study Groups (ST), which aim to foster interaction, discussion, and coordination around current research topics and needs. These groups are organized independently and are generally very open to new members who wish to actively shape the discussion. All groups can be found on the IAG website (geodesy.science) under “Structure”, including information on their backgrounds, objectives, program of activities, and members. If you are interested in joining one of these groups, please contact the chair/vice-chair of the group and ask them to include you in their group (or if you know one of the members, talk to them directly).

The IAG ECS representatives, established only in the current term, are also actively seeking collaboration beyond IAG, e.g. with the Geodesy ECS group of EGU, the Young Surveyors Network of FIG, and the International Geodetic Student Organization (IGSO).
